100 Events for 100th International Women's Day
100 Million Stitches for 100 Million Women
Artists Biographies: Dance Companies / Artists: Janis Claxton Dance is an award winning contemporary dance company based in Edinburgh. The company creates choreographed works for touring in small-mid scale venues and site specific performance events for unique spaces. Jenny Oswald has been teaching Circle Dance since 1997. In her teaching she aims to share the joy of community dancing with everyone of all ages, especially those who have not yet had that opportunity. On International Women's Day she will encourage us to be part of the music and dances of all the cultures of the world. Spoken Word / Theatre: Agnieszka Bresler Polish actress and theatre practicioner, working in physical theatre, traditional drama and film. Artistic Director of Gappad Theatre which she formed in 2006 in Glasgow. At present shares her time between Scotland and Italy where she works with Milan based Teatro La Madrugada. Visual Art: Sue Biazotti Sue studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art, and went on to post graduate studies at Byam Shaw in London. She currently lives and works in Glasgow and has her studio at the Briggait. Her subject matter ranges from abstract to figurative and landscape work. Awards she has received include an Elizabeth Greenshield Scholarship and also the Aspect Painting prize and she has exhibited widely. At the start of 1998 Honey completed her studies at Stockholm University receiving a BA in Humanities (majoring in Anthropology). After finishing her studies she moved to Edinburgh where she studied "photography and digital imaging". Honey was the recipient of the Fuji award for fashion photography and collected a prize for Creative Photographer of the Year. Honey is also a regular contributor to the List Magazine, was runner up the the Dazed and Confused Diesel competition and was the official photographer for Linder Sterlings’ The Darktown Cakewalk: Celebrated from the House of FAME, featuring Richard Nicoll’s designs. Liz Keltie Liz has knitted for years and years though she had a long break till starting back in 2008. Liz taught herself to crochet a long time ago, but never really developed it. 16 years ago I also tried a bit of freeforming and restarted in October 2009 after attending a refresher course and learning about Prudence Mapstone's work. Liz is developing her feltmaking skills. She designs clothing which usually combines both knitting and crochet and also likes to represent pictures in mixed media. Katharine Wheeler Graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee in 2001 Katharine has spent time in Australia attracting both public and private commissions. She now works and tutors from her studio in Glasgow, exhibiting locally as well as further a field. Her work has a strong foundation in drawing, figurative depiction and the exploration of colour and light across a form. Sharon Thomas Sharon Thomas is an artist working in Glasgow with her recent career being based between New York City, USA and Rome, Italy. A central theme within Sharon's work is that of the role of artist as author, analyst and social dandy; questioning social constructs, their consequential rituals and arts role within it. Using imaginary material, excerpts from her personal history, and the 'real' history of art; Sharon creates fictional narratives to throw light onto these subjects: where institutional power has to dance with the lay lone voice of the individual Maker. Recent shows include: Mother/mother, Air Gallery, DUMBO New York, 2009, Artists for Athens Pride, Greece, 2009, Apotropaic, Museet fur Religios Kunst, Denmark, 2009 and current solo show: herstoryportrait.com, Trades Hall, Glasgow 7-11 March 2011. Audio Installations Afghan Women's Writing Project I am for sale, part I | I am for sale, part II | A Hope in the Unseen | What's your advice for Afghan women, Hilary Clinton? One Afghan woman's story of the the repercussions which arose after she decided to make her own decisions in love and life, written in 3 parts over the course of a year. This is followed by an open letter to Hilary Clinton, by the same woman, which appeared in the Guardian newspaper on 05/02/11. The writer is one of several women now writing for the recently formed Afghan Women's Writing Project (AWWP), a group created to give Afghan women a platform to tell their stories in a country where their voices are so often silenced.
