We are very pleased to announce the evening programme of celebration:

7.00pm Alyana Galyana start the evening with an improvised performance by Penny Chivas.

Alyana Galyana will present Bulgarian folk songs in a traditional setting, called “sedyanka”. In the old days this was a common social practice where women from the village get together and would sing while knitting or sawing, the young ones preparing their dowry, and the old ones repairing their family's clothes. Sometimes the songs would be gossip driven, other times will be about unrequited love, or freedom songs.

Penny Chivas will be responding to some of these themes during an improvised performance.

7.15pm Voicebeat will sing for us in easy unaccompanied harmony

Voicebeat is a multicultural singing group, or world music community choir, based in the West End of Glasgow.  We sing songs from around the world in easy unaccompanied harmony, often in foreign languages, in an informal, lively, supportive atmosphere.

7.45pm Lorna Callery reads some of her poetry

Artist/Writer/Educator - interested in exploring the space between visual art and literature.

8.00pm Sarah Banjo take us on a colourful trip through her lands of quick wit, love and pity

Sarah Banjo is a quirky cat/singer/songwriter/mother/wife/woman/banjo attack system from Cellardyke who likes swimming in the sea deepity deep deep deep. Her songs of love and pity take you on a colourful trip through lands of quick wit and fists, always with a hopeful look on bittersweet life. This happy cat with the arched back plays a magical mix of folk – pop – doowop. In 2008 she released her first self-penned EP ‘Siller Songs’ produced by Steve Mason. This year sees her newest release out on Ubisano records featuring RM Hubbert.

8.30pm On The Stage Of The Present part 2 with Tom Pritchard

Tom is a freelance performer, teacher and maker based in Glasgow. Since December 2010 he has directed the multidisciplinary improvisation research On The Stage Of The Present. He will present aspects of this work throughout the day.

8.45pm Julia Doogan is singer/songwriter and may or may not appear with some musically minded friends

Julia likes making music, drinking tea and wearing patterned dresses.

9.15pm Wendy Ivers the comedian presents her very serious ‘Feminist Manifesto’

Wendy Ivers will be presenting her 'Feminist Manifesto' which is a ludicrous take on everyday difficulties associated with being female in a man's world!

Wendy is a qualified and experienced Community Education Worker with a BSc Honours in Health Sciences and over fifteen years experience in youth and community work the last ten years of which have been largely focused on voluntarily developing Aberdeen's Comedy Scene.  She has been involved in International Women's day on many occasions in the past including giving performances at community events such as this one and in 2007 was responsible for designing and facilitating an interactive consultation that informed the gender equality strategies of Aberdeen City Council, Grampian Police, The Robert Gordon University and other public bodies. Wendy is currently working on her autobiographical novel which is about the mind, madness and mental health theory and practice.

9.40pm Alyana Glayana say good evening

Last year Garterstitch100 attempted to collect one knitted stitch for each missing women. Knitted squares came from all over the world, from men, women and children of all ages.

International Women's Day 2012 will be your last chance to buy one of the beautiful blankets.

It is estimated that up to 100 million women are missing from todays global poputlation due to the extremes of gender discrimination.

sitandknitabit | 100 million stitches for 100 million missing women

Last year Garterstitch100 put out a call for knitted squares. The cries were heard in countries all around the world: from men, women and children of all ages. Some had been knitting all their lives, some had been taught just so they could contribute a square.

All the stitches are equal, all representing a woman missing.

Since International Women's Day last year, the thousands of knitted sqaures have been diligently stitched together by volunteers into amazing, colourful blankets. The blankets will be on display for the day and available for purchase. All the money raised from the sale of the blankets will be shared between the five charities Garterstitch100 is supporting; Apne Aap, CARE, Fawcett Society, Glasgow Women's Library and Women's Support Project.

Drawing Living Theatre
Jenny Soep and Emma Hagen

Drawing Living Theatre is an interactive workshop using drawing, drama and creative action methods to explore a chosen topic.

Think of a woman in your life. She could be you. What's your least favourite thing about her? What's your favourite? At this particular event, the 101st year of International Women's Day, we look at one negative aspect of a woman in your life, the possibility to accept this, and celebrate the positive. There are always at least two sides, and it can be good to take a fresh look at the flip side.

This workshop will take place from 1pm-3pm and is open to both men and women. If you would like to book a place please email garterstitch100@gmail.com with Drawing Living Theatre as the email subject.

Emma Hagen is an experienced drama artist and psychodrama psychotherapist who has worked with a diverse range of groups and individuals, and is passionate about combining her skills to create unique and dynamic projects. She has pioneered Therapeutic Theatre at the Citizens and Arches as part of Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival, and Living Theatre at the Tron Theatre.

Jenny Soep is a visual artist that specialises in drawing the live performance of music and arts happenings, creating dynamic illustrations that capture movement, character and atmosphere.
She has been the official artist for the prestigious Polar Music Prize, drawing Patti Smith, The Kronos Quartet and Bjork amongst others, as well as being resident artist for various other notable arts festivals including Crossing Borders (Den Haag), Arches Theatre Festivals, Projector Animation Festival, StAnza, Triptych and even the World Porridge Making Championships.  She has had exhibitions both nationally and internationally, as well as having been featured on BBC Radio Scotland and STV news.

The Garnethill Women's Institute will be leading some alternative crafting to help us think about the injustices that still exist in the world, and the 5 LOOP nominated charities that are trying to do something to alleviate them. But as there is also much to be joyous about, they will also be asking for your help in creating bespoke bunting to celebrate the inspirational women in all of our lives. Oh and cake... in true WI style, the ladies will have baked up a storm to go with your cuppa, all proceeds to the nominated charities.

Artist Victoria Evans will bring the excitement of the 28 Drawings Later project to International Women's Day with a Re-Draw workshop.

The sights and smells of make-up can conjure up thoughts and memories, especially about the women in our lives - as well as evoking thoughts of our own childhood and teenage experiments. Almost every woman and very many men have created art from their own faces at some point in their lives or another. 'Redraw' invites you to reinvent these mysterious feminine objects along with some more traditional drawing materials to make art on paper.

Victoria Evans is a visual artist working mainly on large scale oil paintings. She also runs an online group drawing exhibition and social networking experiment called 28 Drawings Later. Participants are invited to make a drawing a day for the 28 days of February and share them online. This leap year the project is being extended into an ‘offline’ exhibition which will form the starting point for the Re-Draw drawing workshop for International Women’s Day.

You can find out more about Victoria's Work here and see this years 28 Drawings Later online project here.

The 'offline' exhibition opens on Sunday 4th March at The Old Hairdressers.

The Library supports thousands of women across Scotland every year in improving their lives through its range of support and activites that tackle a wide range of issues from poverty and women's health, to sexuality and surviving violence.

Glasgow Women's Library aims to advance the education of the general public by increasing the knowledge and understanding of women's history, lives and achievements. It provides information on a range of women’s and gender equality issues. And enables women, particularly the most vulnerable and excluded in society, to access the information, resources and services they need to make positive life choices.

Garterstitch100 would like to put together a book documenting the Centenary Year of International Women‘s Day. Documenting the events that have taken place, the communities that have grown, and the awareness that has been raised. We are looking for contributions from you, from the people that have been involved, from those that stitched some of the 100 million stitches, to those that took part and attended any of the loop events this year. We need your photographs, stories, drawings, comments, letters. Anything that will help tell the tale.
